The laboratory’s overall aim is to identify, through genetic, RNA or proteomic screening, new therapeutic targets in patients with head and neck cancer. Candidate genes and proteins are characterised at the molecular level using cell lines and patient biopsies to determine their mechanism of action. Once their biological relevance in proliferation has been identified, we design chemical compounds capable of blocking their signalling pathways to provide new therapeutic approaches. Clinically, our reference population encompasses more than one million people from Vall d’Hebron Hospital and its tertiary care area — a population with a growing proportion of elderly patients. The Otorhinolaryngology Head-Neck Surgery Department diagnoses and operates over 200–250 head and neck cancer patients annually, a figure that continues to rise. The department has pioneered robotic surgery and pre-operative 3D planning for complex cases.
