In 2025, we worked in a PERIS Validació project (SLT036/24/000017, AGAUR) to replace erythrocytes by our synthetic synthrocytes in hemagglutination assays, which are used worldwide to track flu epidemics and recommend vaccine annual reformulation. Compared to animal RBCs, synthrocytes are robust, stable and compatible with mass production for global distribution. We also worked in projects QUPID (EuroNanoMed AC21_2/00021, ISCIII) and CATMAL (CaixaResearch Health LCF/PR/HR23/52430013, La Caixa) to produce point-of-care diagnostic devices for fast, simple and quantitative detection of malaria. We tested our technology in Angola and we explored the use of synthetic aptamers and nanotags to substitute antibodies and enzymes in classical immunoassays. Finally, in project PID2023-148950OB-C22, we worked in collaboration with researchers at the National Centre of Microelectronics to develop a technology for digital electrochemical detection of respiratory infections.
