In 2025, the group completed key projects within its established research lines while expanding into new areas. The +AGIL and AGIL‑URBA projects were completed, examining how physical exercise programmes and the urban environment influence mobility and physical activity in older adults. In parallel, the REFIT project further contributed to this line by promoting functional improvement and healthy ageing. Work also continued on the QCOA study, aimed at evaluating services and outcomes in home hospitalization through the development of PROMs and PREMs. A major milestone was the launch of ISMED CLIM, a Horizon Europe–funded consortium, addressing climate change–related health risks among vulnerable populations in Southern Europe. Collaboration with IRI‑UPC also advanced the FRAILWATCH project, focused on designing a robot to assess frailty in older adults. Together, ISMED CLIM and AGIL‑URBA consolidate a new research line on environmental impacts on vulnerable ageing populations.

I Fòrum Ball
Place: Edifici Central VHIR
Date: 06/05/2025
Brief: On May 6, 2025, the 1st BALL Forum: Building Participatory and Ethical Ageing took place, bringing together around one hundred people from diverse backgrounds who shared experiences aimed at highlighting the role of older adults in the design of future solutions. The Director of Parc Sanitari Pere Virgili (PSPV) and head of the REFIT-bcn research group, Dr. Marco Inzitari, and the Director of Internal Strategy at VHIR, Dr. Anna Santamaria, opened the event with welcoming remarks. They represented two of the institutions behind BALL: PSPV as the driving force of the living lab, and VHIR as the host of the event. This was followed by the opening address delivered by Ms. Assumpta Escarp, BALL ambassador, who shared an inspiring message: “future solutions must respond to real needs, and only older people truly know what those needs are.” All organizations that make up BALL were present at this first Forum, and several of them also took part in one of the five roundtable discussions held during the event.

First meeting of the regional expert group of ISMED-CLIM, a European project for the protection of vulnerable groups from the effects of climate change in the Mediterranean region
Place: Parc Sanitari Pere Virgili
Date: 16/04/2025
Brief: The european project ISMED-CLIM, funded by EU Horizon Mission Climate Change funds, aims to improve the understanding of the effects of climate change on health in the Mediterranean region and co-create effective solutions for the protection of vulnerable groups and the resilience of health systems. The Mediterranean region is warming 20% faster than the global average. In addition, weather conditions have caused more frequent fires, have increased high-intensity precipitation and more heat waves to occur. Coordinated by the University of Cyprus, ISMED-CLIM has 27 partners from 11 countries.

News about the HEAT BCN project, which received a grant from the Barcelona City Council and the "la Caixa" Foundation
Place: Ajuntament de Barcelona
Date: 26/12/2025
Brief: Heatwaves are increasingly frequent and intense due to the climate crisis, and they particularly affect urban areas. In the face of this reality, the HEAT BCN project aims to generate scientific evidence to improve public policies and strengthen prevention and adaptation strategies, focusing on vulnerable groups such as older people. The project will also take into account the social determinants of health, gender and socioeconomic inequalities. Led by the REFiT BCN research group, HEAT BCN is a collaborative project between the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (REFiT BCN group), Primary and Community Care at Parc Sanitari Pere Virgili and the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Barcelona. The project will be developed in three Primary Care Areas of Barcelona (Gràcia - La Salut, Barceloneta and Vila Olímpica) in collaboration with the primary care teams and community agents in the area.
